Javascript Engineer

About WHCC

We are a family-run professional photographic, press, and fine art printing lab. Our goal is to make printing, producing, and reselling products seamless and enjoyable for our clients. As a production-focused company, we employ hundreds of experts who handcraft our products here in the Twin Cities.

About the Team

Within a company of almost 300 people, fewer than 30 are on the Product + Engineering teams. We like to think of ourselves as a tiny startup within an established organization. Everything we do starts with product and design. We examine and solve problems with a user-centric point-of-view. Then we start iteratively building with our engineering teams until we have the best product.  We like great hunches, but good data (especially from our own testing) that backs it up, is even better. So once we release something, we're always looking at customer feedback, behaviors, and analytics to see how we can iterate to make things better.

About the Job

Historically our engineering focus has been integrating off-the-shelf tools to allow clients to order from us, but we've recently undertaken building our own design and ordering tools from the ground up. These editors enable our clients to design products directly in their web browser without downloading any additional software.  This is a new role, and we're looking for an intermediate to advanced JavaScript Engineer to join a small team that focuses on creating experiences that delight our users in design and performance.

About you

  • Enjoy pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the browser and stay up-to-with the latest JS and CSS techniques. You are comfortable using new libraries or writing vanilla JavaScript by hand.
  • Have experience with rendering, interaction, and animation techniques using SVG, Canvas, and/or WebGL.
  • Have experience using React, Vue, Angular, or similar frameworks.
  • Care about performance and have optimized code to ensure performant and smooth interactions.
  • Have an eye for detail and get excited about collaborating with great UI designers.
  • Strive to communicate clearly and with empathy towards coworkers and clients.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with React, Node, Git/Gthub, Python, AWS, and MongoDB.
  • Experience with image manipulation and file uploads.
  • An interest in photography and printing.

Benefits + Perks

We value a workspace that helps us feel creative and energized. Most of us use Macs, but we'll set you up with whatever hardware you like that helps you get the job done. We offer medical, dental, vision, 401k matching, great discounts on photo products, free snacks, and competitive salaries. Our company encourages a healthy work/life balance. We're flexible about remote work, especially when it's balanced with an office presence; we like being able to grab a meeting room and get together when an idea strikes. We love an opportunity for continued learning; we're big into conferences and workshops that keep us up to date and inspired.
